My love of music started young I can remember whirling like a dervish as an infant. In college I played the drums, which is a great way to expel a lot of energy, but trying to get my arms and legs fully coordinated didn’t always work.
Â
The older I became the more I was likely to listen two others playing. Often you would find me dancing alone at a festival to the less known bands. Closing my eyes, I did move through the different rifts. Like a medicine journey, meditation in dance, sound and movement that always brought joy.
Â
Then I found a connection with the shamanic drum. Reiki drumming and Shamanic journeys, womb healing, shamanic and intuitive healing. Listening to the nuances of the drum speaking to me. Telling me where it needs to go through the tones, maybe the fact that I am hearing impaired connected me in ways I did not fully understand. The vibrations move me in their own voice, telling of the density of energy and wanting to clear and vibrate with sound.
People sometimes don’t ‘get it’ till they have had it. Big burly men that may not normally have chosen a treatment, love the sound of the drum beating. The sounds connect the left and right hemispheres of the brain, amazing for depression, anxiety, PTSD and so much more.Â
Â
So, when my eye was caught by crystal bowls, I didn’t know if I would have the same deep connection with them. But something magical happened, as I took a breath and connected, it seemed like the bowls lite up, which wanted to be played next. As grounding and clearing as the drums were, the bowls lifted and expanded in a new and beautiful way. Often they would shine or caught my eye, and when played it seemed right as I gained confidence I would play one with another and a different bowl would flash, gently coming into my awareness.
I wonder if many artists and musicians have this, often seeing them with eyes closed jamming and carried away, and wonder about the sounds and tunes that come to us as divine inspiration. Completely connected to the sound.
Â
So, it’s fantastic to see that people can feel this deep connection and relaxation in the sound baths I am doing. It is amazing to see and hear what is happening within their own journeys, often people feel they have been transported to somewhere else, and like a dream they can’t really recall it, but feel a profound sense of peace.
Ways that you can connect with sound.
Close your eyes and have a fully immersive experience with some music, this may be allowing your mind to see the ballroom dancers and pipes and string orchestra of a classical collection or feeling the different connections and rifts of a cool jazz tune.
Â
Try a different style of music or experience than you would normally, maybe a musical or dinner concert, country music or folk festival.
Â
Learn to play an instrument if you have always felt called to do so.
Â
Go to a Sound bath and experience the vibrations clearing and soothing you.
Â
Join in, make a simple rattle, or chime, and play together or around the next campfire. Maybe get the family to have a sing and play different sounds. Have fun.
